Not a perfect novel but since when did we grammar check on passionate works of necessity? To read Native Son is to walk the snowy Chicago streets, circa the 1930's, and feel all of it. The urban squalor, the racism, the political and social unrest, it's all on display here and delineated absolutely beautifully. But in an odd inverse to the likes of say, a Saul Bellow, Wright doesn't forget to tell a story amidst the deluge of period specific details. To the contrary, there are several moments ov ...more
