This book is a deadly bore, I fell asleep many times (two of which on the subway) while reading it even if I jump around the page. My first meeting with Heinlein had been Starship Troopers and it hadn't made me happy, for Stranger in a stranger Land I had appreciated the effort, but I would have cut it a lot; this story could be way shorter, but it would have been an illegible book anyway. I would say that I tried, but with Heinlein no more.

This is just a silly story about an anarchist revolution without any real exploration of the issues. Also, the characters are cardboard lacking any depth. There is an opening scene where our hero's life is saved from laser firing police (more cardboard characters) by a very close friend. The friend loses his life doing so. You would think our hero would express remorse or regret or even guilt. Nope. Not in this book. Finally the bad guys -- the government -- are all stupid, while the good guys - ...more

If I could, I might dock this a half-star for the few times that Heinlein gets carried away in exposition, but that’s a minor complaint. Mannie’s voice is so consistently delightful, it explores interesting political and philosophical ideas without getting too preachy or patronizing, and it has a surprisingly moving ending involving a computer. I like the way that Heinlein straddles the scientific Hard SF of the Golden Age with the more experimental style and humanitarian interest of the New Wav ...more
