I first read this book in 8th grade, and hated it. But I am 44 years older and it was time to give it another shot, and boy was I wrong as a child. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury created a smart and moving, prophetic story. This one is almost 70 years old and still feels modern today.

I realized last year that I had trouble remembering the plot of books I read in high school: Animal Farm, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Fahrenheit 451. I have now re-read all three. I am glad I did.

There was so much I had forgotten, I seem to only remember the book burning, but there are so many ideas here that are relevant for today. It was published in the 1950s so some things dated (i.e., the role of women, or lack thereof). The idea of constant information bombarding us is certainly relevant. I

This book has a narrow focus. The main character, Guy Montag, is a fireman but as fireman he burns books. For some reason, after meeting a young woman named Clarisse he starts to hide a few books. His wife watched tv on giant screens all day instead. Montag meets an older professor, Faber and talks with him about his love for reading and the value of books: the one contrast to the heartless destruction of books.
