I am nearly 58 and this is the first time I have discovered this sweet, joyful, charming book! Of course in 1975 I was 13 so I may have been just a little too old for this one, but I do wish that I had been able to experience it at about age 8. I think the magic of the story would have resonated with me perfectly at that age.

This is a lovely book with just the right amount of magic.

A very well-written book where not much happens. That's usually not a problem. There are well-explored ideas, great images, and the language and flow of the book is wonderful. The central idea is the kind of thing I love, too-- and the subtle poems on the periphery (Jesse) that really work. ...more
