What Members Thought
How have I gotten through the 59 years in which both this book and I have existed without reading it? I have known about it forever, I have even read many glowing reviews here on Goodreads and been tempted, but I have always thought of reasons not to read it now--to save it for later. And then there was Julie. I mean she went over the top for Shirley Jackson and I caught her enthusiasm and it seeped into my skin and I thought, “I need to read this now. Or one of the guests with telekinetic powers? This story is scary primarily because it leaves the reader in constant suspense. I kept waiting for it to turn into Stephen King's The Shining, but Jackson's psychological analysis of the house guests was a different and very satisfying approach to the horror of

This was great fun. Listened to the 8 hour or so recording in less than two days. Classic ghost or haunted house tale. No graphic violence, perhaps not even any violence at all. But if you let yourself go, great suspense and psychological upset. Slowly working my way through the Shirley Jackson cannon, have not been disappointed yet.
