I chose this one for my read by flashlight/candlelight square for two reason: first, it is short, and second, there is something fitting about reading Sherlock Holmes by candlelight.

It’s Sherlock Holmes. What else is there to say?
I wonder what the reaction was, when this was first released, to Holmes 7% solution. Were people less shocked then by drug use? After all, the original coca-cola had cocaine as an ingredient and was sold by a pharmacist.
You have to remind yourself that this was cutting edge at its time, that Sherlock Holmes was not something well-known or predictable; he was a new creation. After all the reincarnations he has had, that is almost hard to imagine.

I loved this mystery as much as the first Sherlock Holmes. His technique never seems to leave me unsatisfied and Dr Watson is just wonderful. I didn't realize however that Dr Watson met his wife so early on in the series. My impression was they lived together for many years solving crimes together before he left to be married. However, it is only the end of the second case and Dr Watson is already living elsewhere with his wife. Interesting. I will continue on to read The Adventures of Sherlock
