This was such a fascinating, multi-faceted story. Told through the eyes of Noel Strachan, a stodgy older British solicitor, the reader follows the life of Strachan's trustee, a young woman by the name of Jean Paget. The plot carries Paget from England to Malaya during WWII and to Australia. Shute's descriptions of the land and the people bring these to life. The "voice" of Strachan throughout the story brings a touching tone to the story. I really enjoyed it!
