What Members Thought
As with other books I have read by Kawabata, I didn't like this book in the beginning; by the end I am always glad I have read them. His writing is a lovely mix of haiku characteristic contrasts and normal text. The scenes drawn evoke the feel of Japanese culture and landscape and traditions. Dialog too. The books lead up to a crescendo of feeling. The theme, a hopeless love relationship between a wealthy dilettante and a geisha did not attract me.

IF you're undertaking "Snow Country" I hope you're sitting down, preferably on a tatami under a kotatsu, drinking a tiny cup of ujicha as flakes drift by your window... but a plain table is fine, I suppose, as long as there's a fire nearby. And I hope you're not in a hurry.

un libro che poteva essere solo giapponese, non solo per l'ambientazione, ma soprattutto per la modalita' in cui viene narrato. Sembra quasi che se qualcuno si mettesse a strillare intorno a te che lo stai sfogliando, i protagonisti potrebbero uscire dal libro per cazziarlo. Atmomsfere ancora piu' impalpabili di quelle a cui ci ha abituato Banana e un argomento di tipo sessuale trattato come se fosse la lista della spesa, viene da pensare che i giapponesi siano quanto di piu' simile ai vulcanian
