This may be the earliest account of Hiroshima. It follows six survivors, starting at the initial blast. There’s no filler or padding to stretch the book out—it’s only as long as it needs to be. It’s an account of people, not war. It just states the facts. The second half of the book follows the lives of the six through the 1980s and is an update to the original account. This was less interesting but not dull.

Hiroshima is a clear-eyed, unsentimental look at the horrors of war. Hersey explores the aftermath of the destruction of Hiroshima through the experiences of six survivors - all of them civilians who were going about their daily lives when the U.S. dropped the first nuclear bomb on the city.

Alternating between the different stories, this short book is a quick read. It's also gut-wrenching and grim and interspersed with moments of beauty and grace. Hiroshima is described as a classic and a master
