I think The Crucible was terrifyingly prescient for our world today. It also was a brilliant work exposing the hysteria and hypocrisy and lying that seems to have been more important for shaping and establishing truth than truth itself when it was written as an allegory for McCarthyism.
When the Twilight Zone premiered in 1959, just 6 years after The Crucible went into production and 3 years after Arthur Miller himself was called before HUAC, Rod Serling wrote:

Wow. I was forced to read this play this summer because of the mandatory reading required for the AP English class I'm going to take. Needless to say I was less then ecstatic about it, however I quickly found my self enjoying it rather thoroughly. The characters were well constructed and believable and if you didn't find yourself cheering for a character you found yourself cursing them out. It is really easy to put yourself in the situation this people were in and sympathize with them. Definitel
