Sort of the halfway meeting between Melville and Hemingway, at least in this work, London presents a quick but in depth story. The saga of Buck from pampered Southland dog to hardened animal, independent and eventually even one with the nature that he grapples with throughout the whole novel. Though never a true fight, the giving into the primal drive is made satisfying in London's words as the past and the future lose each other in the melting down of learned behavior and reforging of instinct.

Like White Fang, there is much allegorical material here. However, I was not moved in the same fashion as I was White Fang. Based on other's reviews I may be a minority.
