I watched my lazy dogs move from sunbeam to sunbeam as I read about Buck this morning. They are settled house pets, who still have knock down, drag out fights with each other over small infractions of rules that I can't understand. Like White Fang, there is much allegorical material here. However, I was not moved in the same fashion as I was White Fang. Based on other's reviews I may be a minority.

This book spoke about one's authentic self. To find one's purpose in life. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, to do that oftentimes requires an individual to leave behind everything and start anew. Start with nothing and in the most dire of circumstances is the great refinery of being.

Probably Jack London's (1876-1916) most famous book, The Call of the Wild (1903), tells the story of Buck, a dog of indeterminate breed, from his own perspective, his days in the central California Valley in which he grew up, to his days of legend in Alaska and the Yukon Territory where, once tame, he now heeds The Call of the Wild. ...more
