I read this book because it worked for a reading challenge. I had not heard of it before. It is a harrowing read about a girl name Karana who is abandoned on a Pacific island for years. It is a great tale about what it takes to survive. I thought the perspective of a young girl added a certain sense of awe and foreboding to the reading experience. I started this book planning to feel underwhelmed, and I was surprised how much I liked it.
A girl lives by herself on an island for 18 years (based on Robinson Crusoe?). A lot of stuff happens and a lot of stuff doesn't. But I still kept reading. O'Dell's primitive descriptions made the book (namely, the main character) more realistic.
I feel it was deserving of the awards it received. Not my very favourite book, but it's well-written. ...more

I remember reading this and it was probably for school because it wasn't something I'd normally read. I didn't care for it much.
