I read this many, many years ago and only had a vague familiarity with the plot, but it certainly came back to me. At my age and here in the 21st century, it is interesting to read science fiction and what the authors thought the Earth might be in the future. Especially from a 19th century author as skilled as H.G. Wells.

I looked at some trailers for the movies made of this story last night. Reading this horror is one thing, and scary enough for me, but seeing it on screen just a bit too scary!

The start was very promising and riveting, when the time traveler traveled to distant future and come back. The rest of the novel is his explanation of his time travel. He find that humankind had evolved into two races, one living above the ground and one under the ground. He didn't understand their language at first and so he tried to figure out what could have happened for such evolution where the author give his personal view about how it will be in the future. This book was an easy read and had several of the same elements of books from that time period (1890's): a narrator retelling his experience, a focus on the scientific ideas, and formal language.
In this story, the Time Traveller is telling his experiences to a group of professionals who are at his home for dinner. The listeners include a psychologist, the mayor, a medical man, an editor, and a journalist.
