Anna Sewell's classic, Black Beauty surprised me. I don't often read books told from the POV of an animal, and struggle when human thought, language and emotion are attributed to the animals. But this book is so beautifully done, describing the life of this horse in a way that if both realistic, believable and heartfelt. I found the hardships he encountered to be honest and believable.
