This book is such an anomaly. Short and self obsessed, narrowly focused but so profoundly far reaching in its observations on youth, frustration, promises deterred and potential greatness and happiness. More than anything else though, it's a novel about loneliness. The Catcher in the Rye is a story about a teenage boy, Holden Caulfield, and his encounters with different people after being expelled from his school and running errands in New York, avoiding to return to his family.

Filled with memorable characters and colorful dialogue. I guess it captures the challenges, despairs, depression and utter helplessness in trying to fit into society (and the world in general). In this case the year is 1945 and the main character manifests this desperation as a young adolescent. I can understand why this book is favorite with adolescent. I understand those feelings of unconnectedness very well. I guess my story in dealing with it is quite a bit different then the one told, hence ...more
