Being a big fan of George Orwell, I fully expected to love this book. However, it left me less than satisfied. I found myself going to Wikipedia to get the backstory, as Orwell really left so many questions unanswered.
According to this narrative (Orwell's first book), Orwell found himself unemployed and penniless first in Paris, and then in London. But Orwell was very vague on how he came to be penniless and homeless in Paris and London. According to Wikipedia, he was definitely not without reso ...more

George Orwell, better known for his novels Nineteen Eighty-Four Animal Farm has written other great books. This is clearly one of them.
Partly autobiographically, he tells -often with fine humour- the life at the bottom of society in Paris (as a working poor) and London (in the world of tramps). His observations on poverty and possession are very insightful and stil feel modern.

Listened to this as an audio book, and found it, amazingly funny. Yes. Funny. Not what I expected from Orwell at all.
Its the fictionalized memoir (do not know how much is fiction) of Orwell's experiences as a homeless person in Paris and London. He tells a lot stories brimming with ironic humor.
The sections wherein he gets a bit more political are, obviously, quite a bit more pedantic and dull.
