I read this book because I enjoyed "Siddhartha" immensely. On the surface, they read so differently. One is a man's search for enlightenment. The other is a cry for help from a man who sees all pursuits as ultimately meaningless. But there are similarities. I was glad to have the opportunity to pick up Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse, which explores the two selves within a particular individual. In this case, the two selves are the intellectual and the wolf-like aggression. This train of thought is explored even more as the central character, Harry Haller (another "H.H." in a Hermann Hesse work) engages in a life-changing experience at The Magic Theater, which is "For Madmen Only."
