2024 Update:
Why on earth would I have said that Charles Dickens is predictable? My 2017 self was obviously having a moment of delusion. I don’t think I have ever completely predicted what Dickens was going to do next, and his characters are, in general, nothing if not unique. Other than that shocking opening, I’m not unhappy with my first review of Nicholas Nickleby.

Nicholas Nickleby is the 3rd of Dickens’ works I’ve read as part of my #ayearofdickens2021 challenge. It fits nicely after the Pickwick papers and Oliver Twist and seems to marry elements of the two preceding works.

Nicholas Nickleby is a typical Dickens story, with quirky characters, a constantly moving plot, and a heartwarming ending – everything I love about Dickens. It starts with the death of Nicholas’s father, leaving Nicholas the head of the family and the one to take care of his sister and mother.
