#3 on my chronological reading of the McCrum list. Great and so glad that I finally read it (after trying about 10 years ago and giving up!)... As in Pilgrim's Progress, I see the effect on novels throughout history now. Struggling against the desire to give EVERY book on the list a 5, but I was going to give it a 4.5. But despite how difficult the reading was, it was truly a great read. Although almost excruciating in the number of things I had to define and learn historically!

I have had this book on my shelf for a long time and I really looked forward to reading it. It was just ok and very slow going. I’m not sure which voyage I liked best but the third tale was the hardest to get through.
