Hardy at his best. First tier in storytelling, character development, and use of language and description. It is like being served a feast to listen to Hardy entone over the features of the heath. This is the 3rd Hardy novel I’ve read as part of #TheGreatThomasHardyReadalong on instagram.
It’s definitely been my favourite so far!
From the opening lines of this novel we are immersed in the wild and ancient landscape of Egdon Heath.

At least this time it turned out better than usual for someone,because Thomas Hardy is usually ruthless with his characters, good or bad. Particular setting that reminded me, for no particular reason, of the moors of the Hound of the Baskervilles. The women are always the usual tragic heroines whose end is written from the beginning, it seems almost already present in the first description that the author makes of them, a kind of "scarlet letter" from which it is rather easy to infer the end of
