It is with sadness I read this excellent book. Virginia Woolfe’s novel did not lose any of the power it once must have had, little has changed since then.
In this book she explains why women are so seldom found among the big writers.. ‘ one needs a room of one’s own and 500 pound a year’ As of today way to few women have the same opportunities as men do. Here’s the thing… I did not enjoy my time reading this book. I do like some of the takeaways, though. If she had condensed this into 30 some-odd pages and concisely said what she wanted to say, I’d be all over that. But she takes such seemingly random (and tiresome) roundabout ways of getting to her point that by the time we arrived at it I was bleary-eyed and skimming. A highlighter and pen really helped because now I can go back and reference the interesting things she said and not have to mud ...more
