كتاب يجب أن يقرأه الجميع. أولا، لفهم خلفية النساء في الأدب وثانيا لفهم ما تستحق ككاتبة وكفرد في المجتمع. هذا المقال هو قراءتي الأولى لفرجينيا وولف بالإنجليزية وأحببت أسلوبها الملتو أحيانا في الوصول للفكرة. وفي هذا المقال الطويل تأخذنا فرجينيا في رحلة عبر الزمن وفي عقلها لنفهم وجهة نظرها أثناء كتابتها مقال "النساء والأدب". وتبدأ مقالها بتلقيها نظرات غريبة للسير في مكان مخصص للرجال ثم منعها من دخول المكتبة ما لم تكن بصحبة رجل، لتحدد اللهجة والبيئة التي تتحدث عنها.

في البداية، تناقش فقر النساء وكيف أنه حتى وقت قريب من عصرها لم يكن يحق للمرأة امتلاك أي مال حتى لو كان مالا جنته بطريقة ما. ثم تبدأ بتحليل بعض الكتب والروايات منها أعمال شكسبير وجين أوستن وشارلوت برونتي وتولستوي وغيرهم، ومنها تظهر تأثير اختلاف بيئة الكتابة وجنس الإنسان وظروف المجتمع تجاهه على الناتج النهائي وكتاباته. وتتحدث أيضا عن فكرة مثيرة للاهتمام وهو العقل المزدوج، الذي يجمع بين العقل الذكوري والعقل النسائي وكيف تختلف كتابة وقراءة الأعمال إن استخدمت شقا واحدا أو كليهما.

تتحدث كثيرا عن الاضطهادات التي واجتها وتواجهها المرأة ولكنها تعترف أيضا ببعض الأفضليات التي تتمتع بها، فتعترف أنه لولا المال الذي تتلقاه شهريا بعد وفاة عمتها ما كان سيسنح لها أن تكتب وتؤلف وتعيش بهذه الحرية، لتصل في النهاية إلى غايتنا: المرأة لتبدع تحتاج إلى دخلها الخاص وغرفة تخصها، والإبداع ليس رفاهية، بل هو حاجة إليها كما هو حاجة بالنسبة إلى الرجل.

This book is a must for every feminist, first to understand the background of women in literature, and second, to see what she does deserve as a writer and a member of society. I honestly thought this essay would be more straightforward, as in: a woman needs her own room to write, because of this and this and this, but Virginia Woolf takes us on a trip through time and in her mind, to see the thought process of this essay about "women and fiction".

We start with her receiving weird looks for walking on the lawn which is made for men, and being banned from the library without a male companion or a recommendation letter to set the tone of her era and the women's position in it, no matter their level of education. First she discusses poverty and how men until very recently in her time had no control of any money, even money they happened to earn. The, she starts analyzing writings and she focuses on Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Tolstoy and others, to show the difference of writings circumstances and the end results. After that, she talks about the mind, and its two halves, the male and female, and how each of them results in a different book and reading experiences.

She talks a lot about the prejudices she faces as a woman and acknowledges her privilege of having left a fortune, and admits that this isn't something a lot of her contemporaries could own. But the conclusion is that a woman needs her own income and a room she calls her own to be creative, and creativity isn't a leisure or something only men are entitled to.. ...more

Mi dispiace ma Virginia Woolf non fa per me, ho provato con i romanzi e gli ho dato una chance con i saggi, il risultato è stato che per leggere poco più di 100 pagine ci ho messo 20 giorni, inconcepibile.
Il suo modo di scrivere, per quanto a detta di tutti meraviglioso, mi provoca un'indicibile sonnolenza, ogni volta che provo a leggerla mi cade la testa sul libro.
Evidentemente non siamo fatte l'una per l'altra pure se questo saggio sulla presenza/assenza di donne nella letteratura mi interes ...more
