There are so many things that I want to say about this book, including just how much it SURPRISED ME (in the good way) with how political + sharp it is- this is NOT the children's adventure story I was expecting, but instead a biting comment against America in the era of Civil War, and also a commentary against the notion of royalty and hierarchy. I gave this four stars when I did the book on CD a few years ago. I just read it for real, and still stand by the 4 stars. I think when I was listening, I focused more on the story -- the knight battles, the intrigue with Merlin, etc. It was, as Twain typically is, just a good adventure story. Reading it in print caused me to focus a bit more on his philosophical and political asides - and also the discussions I had with Addy who read this for class this past year.
