At only 12 years of age, Charles Dickens was sent to work in a dilapidated blacking factory on the Strand for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, following his father’s incarceration in debtor’s prison. This gave Dickens a unique perspective into the harsh conditions experienced by children from poor families who were not afforded the educational opportunities and economic privileges he had previously received. This is my favorite Christmas Story. And I hate it when Christmas ends. It’s so hard to let go of the warmth and love of the Season. I recently rediscovered a very old copy of this book that I had been given by my grandparents. I read it before packing everything away, in homage to Christmas ( and to borrow a phrase from Fred.) The story never ceases to remind us of the importance of civility and kindness and love. It seems like we could all use a refresher course!
