What Members Thought

December 19, 2024 (probably my fifth read)
It made me think that no one is truly lost and there is hope for even the most hardened of hearts. God bless us, every one!

What an uplifing book! I could read it every year and never get tired of it. A timely reminder to think of others before oneself, to keep the true meaning of Christmas always in focus and to put forth kindness and happiness towards others regardless of their manner or circumstance.

I've seen too many movie and television versions to count, but before this week I had never read the book that spawned them all. And now that I have, I can say I see what captured the imagination of so many. Having said that, I also thought the story a bit rushed, particularly the ending. But anytime you have ghosts in doorknobs and ghosts wearing chains weighed down with cash boxes to signify the sin of greed, you know you are in the hands of a good writer. This is still early in Dickens' writi

Read in Penguin Classics' A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings.
This article on Dickens and Christmas nudged me into re-reading A Christmas Carol. The introduction to this Penguin edition even starts with the same anecdote, about the costermonger's daughter who asked “Mr Dickens dead? Then will Father Christmas die too?”
I rarely re-read books, not least because there are too many classics I wish I'd read, and which I haven't yet read once, to launch myself into a project of re-reading. ...more

This is my favorite Christmas Story. And I hate it when Christmas ends. It’s so hard to let go of the warmth and love of the Season. I recently rediscovered a very old copy of this book that I had been given by my grandparents. I read it before packing everything away, in homage to Christmas ( and to borrow a phrase from Fred.) The story never ceases to remind us of the importance of civility and kindness and love. It seems like we could all use a refresher course!
