I have tried to read this umpteen times. I have never completed it. I will now try listening to the unabridged audiobook version read by Anthony Heald, a narrator whose performances I highly admire.

I won't miss this one. Also available at iTunes for download and podcasts.

As stated by the Moby Dick Big Read project, Moby-Dick is the great American novel. But it is also the great unread American novel.

This was not an easy read. It was part encyclopedia, zoology lesson as well as anatomy (whale). When the story moved it was a fun and absorbing read. I was pleasantly surprised at the humor which helped move the story. If this book was published today it would be about 200 pages thinner.

I really enjoyed this book, although there were chapters that tedious to say the least, but overall, I enjoyed the experience. The beginning of the book is wonderful. The descriptions of Ishmael looking to go to sea are perfect.

Just go read the first chapter or two. You will understand why this book is famous. It does what only literature can do. Truly brilliant stuff.
