Dracula was a bit of a surprise to me. It seemed to have little in common with the old Bela Lugosi film that I remember (albeit not very vividly) from my childhood. I can see why it became a classic and endured over the years, it is sensational and mildly erotic.

As much as I’ve enjoyed watching several movie versions of Dracula over the years, I now see that none of them truly did justice to the book. They cannot capture the essence of the times nor the horror that Bram Stoker invoked in the reader when he described Dracula’s vile assaults on God-fearing, genteel young women in Victorian England. Even now, the following passage had the capacity to fill me with disgust:

Finally, after three attempts, I have finished! My biggest takeaway from this is that this is a classic that has suffered with how widely it has influenced pop culture. Knowing its cult classic significance inevitably spoils most of the big mystery and makes it feel like the build-up to this reveal takes forever.
