What Members Thought

This is one of those books everybody read in high school except me, so I figured it was about time I got to it. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the story moved. It never dragged, and I was always wondering what would happen next. It's really a pretty simple story, so it's very skillfully done to keep me so engaged. The writing is lyrical; very fine. One of the key points in the book is how Jane chooses to follow her values and convictions instead of indulging in a present happiness. Th

It's a shame that people always think of Jane Eyre as a romance novel. There is definitely a passionate romance between Jane and Mr. Rochester, but there is also such a strong feminist attitude expressed through Jane's character. She refuses to accept a position below her intelligence, and therefore refuses to run off with Mr. Rochester to live out her days in Europe as a mistress. She could have easily gone an "Anna Karenina" route, choosing to be Rochester's lapdog while he remains entrapped b

I had to suspend lots of belief to get through this. I'm really not a fan of the Bronte's alltogether.
Jane seems like an intelligent gal - to get through her somewhat miserable life, she has to be. So she shows up at this creepy house, with this creepy guy, and things are weird, and only get weirder. Does she flee on the next train? Nope. She finds the crazy woman locked in the attic - nope, she sticks around. She falls for the creepy guy.
The whole thing is ridiculous. ...more

I LOVE JANE EYRE AND IDK WHY IT TOO ME A WHOLE YEAR TO FINISH THIS
Maybe because St John was really skeevy and I just can't take any of the male characters in this book ok, including Mr Rochester the gigantic liar.
