This is one of those books that my teachers in high school didn't assign me, but should've. Classic British fiction that explores what happens when you strand people for weeks away from civilization. It doesn't take long, as Golding points out in notes by essayist E. L. Epstein, to tap into that "heart of darkness" that Joseph Conrad found in human nature.
