I read Crime and Punishment to prepare for an upcoming discussion on Literary Gladiators, as this was the book that was voted the winner of the Big Book Bowl poll. Crime and Punishment explores the mind of a younger man that wants to make a great impact in the world, but at the same time has a mind that is a bit erratic and immature. In this case, a particular Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov decides to murder an elderly lady that works as a pawnbroker and is viewed as crotchety and snarky. This le ...more

My personal rating system reserves 6 stars for the exceptional, all-time greats - my favorites of the favorites. This outstanding novel - a psychological jaunt through the backstreets of St. Petersburg with a fascinating, complex protagonist- makes that list. This is a gem!
