LETS START WITH WHAT I EXPECTED TO GET OUT OF THIS BOOK. I EXPECTED THE ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY PLOT OF A GIRL FALLING IN LOVE WITH A BOY,BUT THEIR HAPPY ENDING IS DELAYED BECAUSE EITHER A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND INTERFERES WITH EVERYTHING. BUT LETS JUST SAY THAT THIS BOOK PROVED ME WRONG, AND THE HARD WAY.

This is a review that has been a long time in coming. The reason being that, for the longest time, I had deemed no words eloquent enough to convey my thoughts about this book to the world at large.

Just loved this beautifully written, heart-wrenching story of Maddy a sick teen living in a sterile house with her mom. Never leaving the house her whole life. Till she mets Olly then everything changes. Not to give this away but the ending captured my heart. Wow! Highly recommend this to teens and up. What can I say I am adding this to my list of favorites. Also love the beautiful illustrations by her husband David Yoon.

This book. Where do I start?

I loved it. I absolutely loved it.

Maddie is a girl who is allergic to everything. Anything can make her sick. She has lived her life in the protection of her house, completely equipped to handle her delicate and rare condition, and the only people she associates with in person are her mother and her nurse. And then a boy moves in next door who makes her do something she never thought she'd do, and knows she never should do: W I will definitely read this again one day.

This book. Where do I start?

I loved it. I absolutely loved it.

Maddie is a girl who is allergic to everything. Anything can make her sick. She has lived her life in the protection of her house, completely equipped to handle her delicate and rare condition, and the only people she associates with in person are her mother and her nurse. And then a boy moves in next door who makes her do something she never thought she'd do, and knows she never should do: Want more. Because wanting something you can't have only leads to more wanting.

I had a very similar upbringing to Maddie. I think a lot of the fiercest criticism of this book will come from people saying "But that's not allowed! No one can just raise their kid like that!" Actually, it's very much allowed. The government only cares that a child is being educated and they're not being physically abused. Complete isolation is not considered abuse.

I was pulled out of school in 8th grade for several reasons. I was not allowed to contact my friends. I was not allowed to leave the house, except when my mother took me to the doctor or to my grandmother's house. I lived like that for about three years. In those three years, the only people I saw were my mom, my brother, my grandmother, and my doctor. I begged to go back to school when I was 16, and it spurred many fights between me and my mom. Now, I barely see my mom, but the level of isolation I experienced during those years still has an impact on me ten years later. I'm not the person I would've been had she not done what she did. I don't even know who that person could possibly be.

So I relate to Maddie in so many ways. This book spoke to me on so many levels. I admire the way Maddie decided to take her life back, that if she didn't get to live it, it wasn't worth having. I love the way she realized that simply surviving was not living. To truly live your life, you have to be willing to risk losing it. I actually said these same things to my mom when I was 16 years old, nine years ago now. They were the words that finally made her relent and let me go back to school and start playing tennis for the school team.

Watching Maddie free herself from the shackles that had been around her ankles her whole life reminded me of the day I shed mine: the first day stepping onto the tennis courts, surrounded by other girls my age, for the first time in three years. Knowing how angry my mom was and no longer caring about whether I was hurting her feelings by living my own life. Feeling in control because, for the first time ever, I was making my own decisions. Exactly like Maddie.

This book was so much more than the romance, although Olly was amazing. He was so understanding and uplifting. He was exactly what Maddie needed, no matter what she needed at the time. I wish more people would see that he wasn't just the love interest. He was the catalyst. He was the thing that changed, the thing that opened Maddie's eyes to the world in a way that made her realize everything she was missing. Without him, she'd have no life. It doesn't matter whether they're together for the rest of their lives. What matters is that he gave her her life, and he helped her make it hers. Maddie did the real work, but she'd never have done it if Olly hadn't made her realize it needed to be done.

Maddie's mom didn't seem to care how Maddie lived her life, only that she survived and was there for her and spent time with her. And she didn't seem to notice how unhappy Maddie was when she began to realize the world was passing her by. I would like to know what progress is made between the two of them. A follow up novel, set a few years later, would be incredible to see the progress Maddie and her mom have made. And Olly and his family.

I have seen a few people say that the twist at the end cheapened the book. No. Not true at all.

The twist at the end is what made the book so powerful. It wasn't just a book about illness. It was a book about MENTAL illness, and the effect it has on the people in that person's life. Mental illness isn't just diagnosable conditions. There are so many varieties of it, and healthy people can be tragically impacted by it. The twist at the end MADE the book. Some people say it turned it into just another YA romance. That can't be farther from what it did in my opinion. It made the book real and powerful.

I wouldn't call it a happy ending. I would call it a rough beginning. ...more

This book is very fast read. At times i felt the drawings were not necessary to the story but made the book read faster. Its about a 17 year old girl who is allergic to everything and lives trapped in her house. One day a boy moves in next door and her life changes. Did not see the twist at the end. Great enjoyable read.

I loved this book from beginning to end. It was a wonderful story about a girl trying to live her life as best she can whilst being unable to leave her hermetically sealed house. Madeline is allergic to everything and cannot leave the safety of her home. Then a boy moves in next door and she wonders if what she has been ding to the last 18 years actually qualifies as living.
