This book is a lot more straight-forward than, for example, Cheryl Strayed's Wild, but it's about a similar topic. In 1955, a 67-year-old woman finally has her abusive husband out of her life, her 11 children are all married and off on their own, and she's found time to prepare for a 2000 mile hike through the Appalachians. I really enjoyed this well-told story of Emma Gatewood, the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine (a distance of 2000+ miles). "Grandma" Gatewood was plucky and determined and, consequently, inspiring; readers can't help but cheer her on and want to follow in her Keds-shod footsteps. When Emma finished the Appalacian Trail she did it again (Maine to Georgia this time), and when she finished that, she hiked the Oregon Trail, "for a lark."
