This book is wordy, lengthy, time jumpy, POV switchy.... so many things that I usually do not enjoy. In fact there have been numerous books that have been ruined for me in the past due to any one of those mentioned. BUT it all worked in this book. Possibly because I was so engrossed in the story I just didn't care. Despite the million characters and all the different POVs and the time jumps all over the place I was never once lost and I was 1000% in it.

The book was a bit too full of coincidences to be believable. Felt like it wanted to be a bit Alice in Wonderland, a bit mystery suspense novel, a bit romance novel. I think it floundered under the weight of too many red herrings and stock pseudo-feminist characters.

Like many (maybe all?) of Morton's other books there are both past and present timelines, a mystery, and lots of family secrets. There were good things about this book. I adored reading about the house and the time period. I could picture it all very vividly.
