It's like Hogwarts where almost everyone is in Slytherin combined with the Hunger Games and there are monsters.

Disclaimer: There was some twitter chatter about this book being problematic. I found most of the claims to be unfounded but agree that although a reference to long hair being dangerous in a school essentially trying to eat you makes perfect sense in the made-up world of the book, the example used (dreadlocks) didn't translate well in the context of our increasingly racialized world. Loved it
This was brilliant. I really did love El and Orion and how she slowly made friends and found a place of belonging. I loved the world building and the way the magic worked. And I loved the creepy magical school. And I loved how the plot came together.

Hovered between a 3 and a 4 - sometimes I got so frustrated with the teenage angst of it all and there was just SO much world building that it bogged down the story a bit (I mean, it was incredibly detailed and new and strange, and that was amazing, but it made some of the exposition a slog). But I did enjoy the weirdness and the matter of fact tone about all the horrors of the Scholomance. And the ending means I definitely have to read the next one ;)
