This has been on my radar for a long time - set in Colorado! lots of good reviews! - but I just hadn't gotten around to reading it until now. And I am really glad I did. On the surface it is a post-apocalyptic storyline set in the near future, which may be why I didn't read it before. But the story isn't gratuitous and does the characterization as well as any literary novel.
Hig and his dog have survived a plague (or two? or interrelated plagues and other illnesses?) and lives near a airport han

A post-apocalyptic Hobbesian story set in the deep mountains in Colorado. Two men defend themselves against what’s left of the world, one happy to be the last man, the other searching for a connection in this hopeful adventure tale.

Sorry, my Dog Star loving friends but I did not love this one. Nor did I like The Road or Age of Miracles. This post-apocalyptic genre might not be for me.

When I picked this book up I had no idea it was a post pandemic narrative. It reminded me a bit of Station Eleven and of a western story of long ago.

The prose was detailed and painted vivid scenes in this story. While there is a fair amount of violence and an uncertain future shown, there are moments of happiness and peacefulness that perforate the story. The relationship between the main character Hig and his dog Jasper are heartwarming.
