What Members Thought

It's always been interesting to me that Taylor Jenkins Reid's books seem to strike a chord with people who typically read fantasy and genre books. But with this book, I realized that what she is doing is not just contemporary historical fiction, but world-building. Reid is creating a fictional version of Hollywood that is a combination of the Hollywood that exists, and the Hollywood that ordinary people imagine.

3.5 rating. I love, LOVE Taylor Jenkins Reid. Like a love that makes me pre-order her book before I even know what it's about. But this book was not one of my favorites. It just had a different feel. I normally love family sagas and dramas. The chapters on Mick and June were my favorite parts so I preferred the first half. Especially with the nostalgic feel for Malibu in the 80s. I like the closeness of the siblings but really, it's about a family that doesn't want to deal with their issues head

I loved this one. There's a character who shows up toward the end and it sort of needed to happen but sort of didn't that made it a little annoying but I just loved the family dynamics and the characters and oh the redemption (and for some, no redemption at all).

This was just ok for me. I loved the Malibu setting but I could have done with more character development. I just never felt like I really got to know or care about these people. This is a common gripe of mine, so I am well aware this might have something to do with unreasonable expectations on my part.
