What Members Thought

If you read Winter Counts and enjoyed it, this is a great follow up to that, but with younger characters. The themes in this book are explored in such a tender way that everything is brought to life. There is a moment of tropey 'villain explains the plot' and I think some of the information giving could have been a bit more organic, but everything else makes up for those small things. Plus, there is a lot of hockey in this book, and that's always a huge win for me.

Daunis is a science whiz, a hockey star, and a recent high school graduate. I enjoyed the immersion into the culture and scenery of the Ojibwe reservation and the UP more generally. The main plotline was compelling enough to make this book a page-turner. My main problem with this book is that it needed another strong edit--it had a lot of repetition of mundane details, too many plot diversions and side characters, a few tropes that came off as corny, and some issues with the main character's voice (she's 18-19 in the story but sometimes sounds 13 and sometimes sounds 30
