Shelves: historical, fantasy, book-club

Wow. Seriously, this is a sweeping, ambitious, and beautiful book - believe the hype. I loved Addie and her strength and determination, as well as her cunning and her survival skills. My favorite parts were definitely watching her relationship with Henry, but the back and forth helped me get to know both of them (though I had to be careful with the Henry parts to double check the dates because I got mixed up a couple times). So first, the writing is beautiful. But honestly, I’m almost gave up in the first hundred pages because it drags. And then it drags for another 100 pages.

The story annoyed me after awhile. How could this woman live 300 years, and yet there is so little history?

Four stars for the beautiful prose. Story gets three stars.

Oh, man, this book is good! So beautiful and heartbreaking and romantic. And for a story that seems simple - it’s a book about a girl and a boy finding each other, and what happens after - there are such big ideas in it.

Addie LaRue is a love song to art, and creation. It adores the power of song and painting and theatre to capture ideas. This is a book where art needs to be capitalized: Art. Also Idea. Memory. Love. Time. Life.

Review in Brief: I really wanted to like this book, because the premise of a girl signing a deal with the devil to get immortality but in return being instantly forgotten was intriguing. It's well-written and some of the characters, particularly the devil, are well drawn out. The pathos of Addie's human lover Henry is also done well. The bad? Addie herself is hard to love. I read a lot - and this book is why I read. Sometimes you find a book that you want to jump into, a book that you don't want to end and so you savor the last few chapters or pages. I loved this book so much.
This is the story of Adeline LaRue - she makes a deal with darkness and while she gains freedom, she lives an immortal life where no one will ever remember her.
