What Members Thought

This book was so good. It really highlighted the difference between being white, white passing, and Black. The story of the two twin sisters and their daughters and the different paths that their choices as teenagers took them was very interesting to follow. I loved Jude and Reese's storyline, too.

Extremely compelling. I just loved these characters. The writing was excellent and brought out themes that were delicate and complicated and full of vibrating life. Wonderful.

The examination of identity in race, as well as a mystery to be solved, kept my attention throughout this book. However, I found myself being frustrated with all of the characters and especially frustrated with the last line of this book for some reason. It just seemed out of place. The rest of the writing was good, but this had too much family drama and not enough of a resolution for me to love it.

I listened to this as an audiobook after seeing it on the bestseller list and a Goodreads Award Winner and was not disappointed. It focuses on twin girls that run away to Nee Orleans as teenagers to live their lives in different ways—one passes as a white girl and her family has no clue of her background; the other marries a black man and lives her life as she knows it. The book deals with a lot of issues on race, gender, and family drama. Really good read!
