Delia Owens' book came with high praise (and recommendations). I don't remember where I first saw the cover but I thought -- you know, I want to check it out. I have definitely read my share of "southern lit" and Where the Crawdads Sing fit well into that genre...issues and all.

I loved the story of the Marsh Girl. I found it a bit too "perfect" though -- as Owens described her as being beautiful all I could think about was what years of neglect would have done for someone real in Kya's position. ...more

Love the nature writing and the love story. Didn’t care for the crime narrative and all the talk of cooking grits😂

I will admit that I went into this book thinking that it might be another overhyped book but this deserves all the hype it has received. This story about Kya, the Marsh Girl, and the murder of the town BMOC Chase Andrews is fantastic and such a compelling read. Owens does a thorough job of describing the marsh, Kya's fascination with it, the struggles she goes through to survive after she is left along, the design of the town, and the people she barely interacts with. A little girl is left behind due to family circumstances and has to survive on her own in the swamp lands of North Carolina. Beautiful natural descriptions. Stilted narration, cliched southern dialect, implausible plot, stereotypical characters -- this just didn't do it for me. And I know I'm in the minority. ...more
