Delia Owens' book came with high praise (and recommendations). I don't remember where I first saw the cover but I thought -- you know, I want to check it out. I have definitely read my share of "southern lit" and Where the Crawdads Sing fit well into that genre...issues and all.
I loved the story of the Marsh Girl. I found it a bit too "perfect" though -- as Owens described her as being beautiful all I could think about was what years of neglect would have done for someone real in Kya's position. ...more

A little girl is left behind due to family circumstances and has to survive on her own in the swamp lands of North Carolina. Beautiful natural descriptions. Stilted narration, cliched southern dialect, implausible plot, stereotypical characters -- this just didn't do it for me. And I know I'm in the minority.
