Despite the horrific circumstances, this was a really beautifully told story. I'm always nervous about reading fiction set during the Holocaust - it's such an important story to preserve and tell, but to treat it carefully and appropriately and accurately must be such a difficult undertaking for an author. This was an amazing story based on the life of Lale Sokolov, during his time at Auschwitz. He was forced to be the man who tattooed the infamous numbers on the arms of prisoners. Naturally, it has disturbing moments. It is also filled with hope, and, unbelievably, a romantic loved story. A book to be revered.
