I want to like this book more, actually. The story is so inspiring especially because it's based on true events. But somehow - the way Morris writes the book couldn't capture my heart. It's heartbreaking, sure, and lots of tragic moments (it's a holocaust story!)- but I lost the real, genuine voice in this book. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is an emotional and heartbreaking read based on a true story. This story takes place over 3 years and sheds light on the horrors that were happening in Germany’s concentration camps. The bodies and minds broken down each day always with fear of what could come tomorrow. The main character Lale has perhaps more mental fortitude and can foretell that he will somehow avoid death. Despite the horrific circumstances, this was a really beautifully told story. I'm always nervous about reading fiction set during the Holocaust - it's such an important story to preserve and tell, but to treat it carefully and appropriately and accurately must be such a difficult undertaking for an author. The Tatooist of Auschwitz is historical fiction and based on the experiences of a real man, a Slovakian Jew, Lale Sokolov, who actually experienced and survived Auschwitz-Birkenau.
