This was pretty great. I didn't love the set up of the letters that were (gasp!) mailed that weren't meant to be mailed but the characters and dynamics made up for that bit of clunkiness. And primarily what makes this work is Lara Jean. She is the middle sister in a family of well defined roles after their Korean mother dies years prior. I thought this book was incredibly fun and sweet. Lara Jean reminded me of my high school *dorky* self. Except I never wrote love letters and never became pretend girlfriend to the most popular guy in school. There are many aspects of this book that didn't seem realistic, but I don't think it was meant to be. This is what every quirky girl in high school wants to have happen. I really enjoyed this book. I liked that they're we're loving sisters (because I always wanted a sister and I have daughters), I love that the protagonist was part-Asian (but that Han didn't make a big deal of it) and I like how "awkward" yet normal, Lara Jean acts. They make a big deal out of diversity in books these days, but they're not wrong. I would have loved to read something like this as a teen and glad that these exist for my girls.
