4.5 stars rounded up...My goodness what did I just finishing reading? This book is a rollercoaster, granted it is one that builds slowly in some cases for this non-avid fantasy reader. The twists at the end though, I couldn't believe it. I had to go back and re-read multiple chapters because I just did not see the end coming. This complex sci-fi novel - 1st in a trilogy - took me 4 tries to read, in part because it begins with a mother facing the death of her young son. And it’s only downhill from there. Jemison isn’t world-building to escape; she puts her impressive skills toward creating an earth bent on exterminating its inhabitants, a society mired in a vast system and enslaving those with power to control the earth but also destroy life around them. This one is hard to describe without potentially straying into spoiler territory, so this is a fairly general review. The story is told from three different perspectives in alternating chapters; one of the viewpoints is written in second person, which I thought was an interesting way to present the story.
