I know, I know. I'm definitely the minority here. I wanted to love this, because I so loved the first book I read by Backman (A Man Called Ove). And I feel like I should have loved it - I love kids, I love reading/stories, I love seniors. But this book just had too much going on for me, and the story-within-a-story was just distracting and caused the book to drag for me. I was honestly surprised by how good A Man Named Ove was, which left me more than ready for this one. As before I was skeptical, but just like before Blackman weaves this world and people that you can't help but love. Combined with a vivacious almost-eight-year-old that reminds me of myself and a creative bit of sweet words, the cathartic cry I had at they end was inevitable.
