A book group read. I enjoyed this novel about the two Grimke sisters, who were way ahead of their time when it came to abolition for blacks and feminist rights for women.
Kidd effectively juxtaposes the white aristocratic world with the horrific practice of slavery by using Hetty (Handful), the slave given to Sarah Grimke when she was a tween, as a dual narrator. It was easy to pick up on the idea that both women and blacks were enslaved, just in different ways.

A good story. An important story. But it took me a long time to get through. I listened to the audiobook on my commute and, not that it was boring, it just wasn't so engaging in the beginning that I'd rather listen to the story than music. But by the last 1/3rd of the book I couldn't wait to hear what other challenges were to be faced and overcome by these brave women. Now that I'm done, I look back and smile at the thought of Sarah and "Handful" inventing their wings in their own way and growin

I didn't know until I finished the book that it was based on real people! Good story. And loved reading the questions and answers with SMK at the end.

I enjoyed the story but it feels the ending wrapped up quickly for my liking. for a conflict filled story, the end seemed a bit too easy. I may have been too anxious for finishing and missed something but I dont think that's the case. at any rate, I'm glad I read... I feel I now have a different perspective on abolition and women's lives in the early/mid 19th century.
