Sarah Waters is my new obsession.
I devoured this. I was sick all this past weekend, and it was the perfect distraction -- I couldn't put it down. Reminiscent of Oliver Twist, this novel contained a couple of twists that I didn't see coming, including the shocking revelation about a third of the way in. Well... it wasn't at all what I expected. I was expecting something like A Darker Shade of Magic with a Dickensian feeling to it, and I got... hmm... I suppose the base is a love story. It's more a literary fiction than Dickensian. The only Dickens in it is that it's kind of socially realistic view of Victorian society, though... it didn't feel like it. Sarah didn't quite manage to create the Victorian feeling, nor describe the people's characters as Dickens might have - most of the people were
