This book had two major strengths for me. Firstly it felt very genuine in its time and locations, I really felt like I'd been transported to Victorian London. The characters were also very believable and relatable, in their own ways.
Secondly, the clever and twisty plot was fantastic in that each of the new acts of the story made you almost completely re-evaluate everything you felt and thought about the previous act.

Sarah Waters is my new obsession.
I devoured this. I was sick all this past weekend, and it was the perfect distraction -- I couldn't put it down. Reminiscent of Oliver Twist, this novel contained a couple of twists that I didn't see coming, including the shocking revelation about a third of the way in. I found myself rooting for Sue all the way, and I found the emotional ending to be especially rewarding. ...more

I liked this one, a bit of a slower pace than I had expected and I had to put it down a few tunes due to interest and traveling. I enjoyed the setting and how exquisitely crafted both the story and setting were. Overall I liked it and will try another of hers.
